It’s dangerous to go alone, take this

Have you ever noticed how through life, there’s always something we need to take with us when leaving the house?

As a child, I remember being reminded not to forget to bring my homework and my lunch to school with me. As a teenager, it was my bus pass, and as an adult it’s my wallet. But among these common necessities to get through the day there is one in particular that stands out.

The smartphone.

Today’s smartphone is the modern persons version of batman’s utility belt. It offers a tool for most every need conceivable, and for the ones it doesn’t offer we often tell ourselves whatever we needed it for wasn’t that important to begin with.

The first time I ever imagined the technology of the smartphone was in Spy Kids 2: Island of Lost Dreams. In the film, the spy kids are given gadgets to complete their mission, and one of them was the Spy Watch. The watch in the film was a cellphone, had internet access and satellite television, etc. It could not, however, tell time.

I remember at the time that the smartphone hadn’t even become a thing yet, and in fact, the I-pod was barely even a year old.

We all know that technology is advancing faster than we can keep up with, but when looking back, it’s always surprising to me how surprised we were when new technology, the things we only dreamed about in fiction, were actually introduced to society.

I can’t help but wonder if when the day comes that I’ve published, I’ll one day look back and feel the same way when holding my own books.

Regardless, I’m very much excited to find out!
